dear jesus, thank you for my son, milo.
i mean, he is fantastic, really.
upon elsa's arrival at the airport, he put his little arm around her to give her a side hug and then loudly proclaimed "this is my black sister!"
yes milo.
thanks for being so honest.
and then on the drive home from the airport, he sat there, teaching elsa inappropriate bathroom words.
i mean, i'm sure elsa has always wanted to know how to say poopy.
milo, what would we do without you?
he also loves to pat elsa's hair.
he just sits there and gives it a little pat pat.
it's a bit fro-ish right now because i have no clue what to do with her hair.
thankfully i had a friend bring me some hair product today, and teach me how to handle the mane.
elsa, i apologize for the week and a half where i let your hair look like an unkempt, dry, hot mess.
what, i thought we were supposed to wash your hair everyday...no?
i know, cringe, right?
i'm learning.
and that won't happen anymore.
thanks jessica for the help!
happy weekend y'all.

this was a really sweet post. Your son sounds like such a cutie pie and Our good friends who adopted two sisters from Ethiopia also had to learn how to handle the curly, thick hair and friends helped them along the way too. Friends are such a blessing! I have no doubt that you will be a pro in no time! ;0. She is so stinking sweet!!
ReplyDeleteLive and Learn! :-)
ReplyDeleteLoved everything about this post!
My nephew is REALLY into saying "buttcrack" right now - and was proclaiming quite loudly at my daughters baptism that he has a "BUTTTTTTCRRRAAAACCCCKKK!!!"
Happy Friday!

So funny.
ReplyDeleteSo precious! Just makes me smile this morning.
ReplyDeleteWhen my hair was kind of curly (pregnancy does some whacky stuff to your hair), I read the book Curly Girl by Lorraine Massey. She had great ideas for curly hair including a great lavender spray you can make yourself to spruce up hair on a no shampoo day. Love the Milo comments. Call at he sees it kinda guy, huh? ;-)
ReplyDeletethat is too funny. milo is such a sweet and funny kid, reminds me of my aidan..... the would be real pals =) elsa looks like she is fitting in perfectly. ADORE the last picture... she looks happy even if she has dried out hair =)
ReplyDeletelove to you.
Hahaha this post is too funny!
ReplyDeleteThe unspoken big brother code: teach little sister inappropriate words/bathroom humor and encourage her to practice their use at inopportune times. Good stuff! Our little guy follows the same code.
ReplyDelete"this is my black sister". I'm laughing out loud! I bet he said it with such enthusiasm! She is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOh goodness. This made me laugh. MY oldest daughter OFTEN tells people, "This is my sister. She's black. She's my sister." Sometimes I wished I could have that bluntness!
ReplyDeletesuch a cute post :)
ReplyDeleteget some leave in conditioner {its a miracle worker for those curls} and invest in one good hair product for her...
thankfully my daughter {with the crazy curls - whom she inherited from her father who was born in Eritrea}
knows how to do her own hair now... I guess she got tired of me trying a thousand different products on it hahahahahah
Love the first picture, it's so sweet. The second one, bahahahaa! Oh goodness!
ReplyDeleteSTUD.
ReplyDeleteHe cracks me up! My best friend is adopting a child with a fro and has also learned a LOT about the dos and don'ts of styling it and the wonders of new products! Good luck.
ReplyDeleteHaha! Awesome. My in laws have adopted 8 black kiddos and she talked about hair and skin care with some other families at church adopting. (Since there are 7+.) Maybe someone around there could do that for you. :) It really is a lot to learn! Good luck. Your kids are all so adorable.
ReplyDeleteLittle kids are so honest! And SOOO funny! Cute post! I'm so happy for your family!
ReplyDeletethis post was hilarious to me... love the learning moments. and i so, so, so appreciate your honesty and vulnerability as your journey through this process.
ReplyDeleteThat is too cute. It's so amazing how she fits right into your family.
ReplyDelete"black sister!!"...another out-loud belly laugh at my desk at work. :) What are little brothers for, but to teach about poopy and pee?? c'mon! ;)
ReplyDeleteThere are several families at our church who have adopted girls from Africa and I hear them in the nursery swapping hair advise. So cute! Love ya!
Just thought I'd pass this website that I found a while back while searching for adoption related things http://www.happygirlhair.com/ The website is written by an adoptive mom about the hair adventures she has with her Ethiopian daughters. I bookmarked it in case we get a referral for a girl. It has a ton of information!
ReplyDeletethis is my black sister! I am dying. dying.
ReplyDeleteHilarious! Reminds me of my daughter last night...I was taking a video of her talking about her boyfriend. She said, "His name is Sean. Sometimes he wears black & yellow shirts. And he is black like my baby (pointing to the black baby doll in her hands)." But seriously, Elsa sounds like she is doing great and she is so lucky to have such cool sibs. They sound a lot like my kids. Also, I got the photo CD - thanks again!!!! Temple
ReplyDeletemilo is such a crack up! glad you have a "hair counselor" for support. i am a big believer in products i can buy at walgreens or walmart for reasonable prices. very happy with the olive oil brand conditioner and hair dress and shea moisture brand products. all smell divine. palmer's shea butter to for her bod is what we use daily.
ReplyDeletemany blessings to you on this journey of love, bonding and hair care!
Sibling love :).
ReplyDeleteI think I'm going to like it here.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, I think I'm going to have to follow. Sorry. You made me.
Not only is this hilarious it's sweeeeeet!
I just read your "about me" to the left. I thought I was busy. (I had 3 kids in 3 yrs.& 3 months). You got me beat. ;)
Sophisticated Steps
Can I just say I am so glad you're back? Seriously. Please don't ever take a blogging break again. My mornings just aren' the same.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I know you're super dooper busy these days, but I also know you like cool tunes. And I'm hosting a cd swap at the b-l-o-g. Thought you might want to give it a looksie. :)

Happy weekend-ing. :)
oh. this is hilarious! and that picture of him...so funny! I know he is a sweet brother.
ReplyDeletesomeone may have already mentioned this blog, but have you checked out "chocolate hair, vanilla care"?

ReplyDeleteoh my goodness! what a funny little boy that milo is. i hope my son is exactly like him when he grow up, really! you must be laughing non stop!
ReplyDeletei need a milo...so badly.
ReplyDeleteIf it's any consolation, I'm just as clueless as you (were) about sweet Elsa hair! Even if her hair is crazy, it's crazy in YOUR home... what a blessing!

dwell in the season
I'm so thankful Elsa is here! I've been praying for her and for her to join your family!
ReplyDeleteI came over from faithblogs today (also a faithblogs blogger)! Your children are BEAUTIFUL!!! We are in the middle of adopting our 4 1/2 year old son, A from Ethiopia, I have enjoyed reading your posts about your sweet Elsa!!
ReplyDeleteomg, i want to put milo in my pocket! (elsa too).
ReplyDeletecutest post that I have read so far!
ReplyDeleteI know you frequent Kristi's blog, but wanted to send you the link to her post about Lucy Lane's hair: http://weloveourlucy.blogspot.com/2011/02/all-you-need-to-know-about-hair-post.html
ReplyDeleteEnjoy! :)
I am cracking up at the "black sister" comment...oh kids, gotta love 'em! Made my day!!
ReplyDeletetotally just laughed out loud. my step dad is an uber dark mexican-american, like people think he is samoan, or part black...anyway at a neighborhood BBQ last year, this little 4 year old ran up to my mom after she had kissed my stepdad and shrieked, "WHO is the black, dark man?! do you like it when he kisses you?"
ReplyDeleteI love Milo. I really do, who cares if I'm just some creepy internet stranger?
ReplyDeleteYou know why I love him? Not just because he's ahhh-dor-ahhh-ble. Mostly because he reminds me soo much of my 3rd son. Not just his crazy ways. I'm not sure if your kids do this, but when I go through old pictures on the computer the kids run over and point and say the names of whomever is in the photo. Well one day my son Santiago aka Chuleta ran over and I was actually stalking your blog, not going through our family photos. He quickly pointed at a picture of Milo and said, THAT'S ME! I thought it was so funny that he thought that but truth be known I've always seen their resemblance.
Long story short, or long story ending rather... watch out because I want to steal Milo and pretend he's Chuleta's twin.
