teacher gifts and christmas traditions.

okay, so i pretty much suck when it comes to teacher gifts...i always have these great, elaborate plans, but then i do things like, have a baby, and my plans go out the window.
i pre-planned my teacher gifts this year, since i knew if i didn't, they would end up getting an orange or something else lame.
i have a lot of teachers to buy for---each kiddo has 2 each, plus teacher aides. i ended up having 11 gifts i needed to get.
they needed to be easy.
i found this idea on pinterest, via this site.

it was so super easy---and super cute.
inside each cup is a starbucks gift card.
when i bought the gift cards, i just asked for the same amount of small cups with lids.
then i made some tags, and voila.
easiest gift ever.
{these containers have their favorite chocolate in them}

look, our teachers deal with A LOT.
they deserve a little somethin' somethin'.
not only are my kids a handful, they are dealing with everyone else's kids.
i get all sweaty and stressed just walking into their classrooms.
bravo to you teachers...ya'll are the best.

---------------
up next...
a few of our favorite christmas traditions.

the first one is my favorite and it involves the presents.
tradition #1:
each little person gets their own wrapping paper---none of the gifts are marked, and in order to know which gifts are theirs, they have to find a tiny piece of their wrapping paper in the bottom of their stocking.
it's a little last minute excitement, as they see the gifts, but don't know which belongs to who :)
the front gifts are from us---the 193,000 other gifts are from family.
there are a ton of gifts under there, i realize---keep in mind we have a large family.

since moving here, christmas morning has been over the top, because relatives send their gifts, and we wait till christmas morning to open them.
tradition #2:
each kiddo gets 3 gifts (from us): a WANT, a NEED and a SURPRISE.
we've done this every year since caedmon was born, and i really like the idea of it. it keeps christmas simple for us, and works for now. i imagine things might change one day when they start asking for more expensive items.
tradition #3:
christmas eve---we all open christmas jammies that have already been washed and are ready to put on. after jammies, the kids get another present which involves books. so, not only do they get the 3 gifts on christmas morning, but on christmas eve they also get something to WEAR and something to READ.
the kids know they are getting these 2 gifts and look forward to them all day.

this year, after church service that evening we added a new tradition of eating
ice cream sundaes
and drinking hot chocolate...all in our new jammers...when we were finished we watched a short christmas movie, then read our books, then off to bed!
christmas morning we usually have a big breakfast of french toast or pancakes...and we spend the day playing with our new toys and taking naps.
mr. anderson and i decided (the first year caedmon was born) that no matter where we lived, we would always stay home for christmas. i like that we made that decision, but it does make christmas a little sad, not being around family.
i enjoy making traditions with my husband and children, but i do miss friends and family.
at this point, traveling with all of the littles at christmas time, dragging gifts to and from, it just all sounds too complicated, so for now we stay home :)

i hope my kids remember the things we do for a lifetime...and that it helps them to understand the importance of establishing traditions with their own family.
do you have any family traditions?

56 clever remarks:

  2. My family growing up did the same wrapping paper tradition, but I love, love, love the idea of putting a scrap of the paper in their stocking!

  3. Love the wrapping paper idea. Mostly because I detest gift tags. This is our first year doing the Something to "wear, read, want, need". It was a lot harder than the random, thoughtless gift buying I usually do, but SO MUCH BETTER for us in terms of budget & considering what they will truly appreciate. Our traditions include reading a Santa Claus origin story each night of the week of Christmas, eating enchiladas for Christmas Eve dinner, and getting ONE special gift from Santa (I guess that takes the place of the "surprise" gift. Thanks for sharing your traditions with us.

  4. we did starbucks for the teachers too. we have some similar traditions to yours, including the kid designated paper. i'm definitely going to start adding a scrap to the stocking. great idea!

  5. As a teacher- I LOVE your children's teacher gifts! I always love getting a coffee on the way to work in the morning- and a picture of your child attached is great!! I like to keep the little cards, especially the cute ones, and a picture helps jog your memory after many years of many kids! Simple, thoughtful gifts like this always make teachers smile!

  6. I love the wrapping paper idea...I bet that is fun for the kiddos mine would love that! Maybe next year we will give that a try!
One of our traditions that we started many years ago is getting Waffle House to go Christmas morning. We have too many to fit in a booth there so we never eat there any other time...one year we wanted breakfast but too lazy to fix it so my husband went and grabbed it and it was so easy and perfect that it has become our "Christmas breakfast tradition" We all look forward to our Waffle house breakfast on Christmas Morning. It's not home cooked and fancy but it totally works.

  7. I love the idea of each kid getting their own wrapping paper every year. That's perfect! I am going to steal that from you but in a different way... We have decided to give each of our kids a Christmas character so that they know their stocking and get a new decoration in that character every year. I also love the idea of getting new jammies on Christmas eve, how fun! I will have to think about the jammy thing and might just have to do that too. :) You're so creative.

  8. We've also chosen to stay home for Christmas. This year it was really difficult to tell our extended family that we still weren't traveling, but my kids were so happy. They love being home watching Christmas movies, working on our 1000 piece puzzle, listening to music, eating yummy things.

We have so many traditions. It is so fun for me now because my kids are older, so whenever they love something we do together they decide it should be a new tradition! So sweet. My favorite is reading Luke 2 and singing carols.

    Merry Christmas, Anderson family!

  9. LOVE the coordinating wrapping paper to the piece in their stocking- adds suspense and excitement!

  10. I'm a teacher and I think your teacher gifts are fantastic! I also think you're pretty awesome to put together a post like this with a 1 week old baby:)
Your Christmas traditions are wonderful- especially #1. My husband and I have agreed that once we have children we will stay home on Christmas too!

  11. I saw a similar Starbucks teacher gift that I loved on Pinterest - the girl did a giftcard and a PocketBac: http://ournexttoddleradventure.wordpress.com/2011/12/03/adorable-teacher-gifts/

As for traditions, we live 3 hours from our family (right now, anyway) and our daughter is the first grandchild on both sides... so we spend the holidays traveling. Hoping to change that soon, though!

  12. i love the "types" of gifts that you get your children! my husband and i have decided to do 3 gifts from us, like the 3 baby jesus got from the wise men but having a "type" makes those gifts that much better, to me! our family is huge on traditions and i love reading about other families and incorporating those into ours! merry christmas and congratulations on your little olive!

  13. Ok, ok, I'm officially motivated (guilt-tripped) to get my son's teacher something. Of course now I only have 1 day to do it, but I'll do something!
I LOVE your Christmas traditions, especially the gift wrap idea. Oh the sheer torture of waiting until you reach the toe of your stocking before you even know which gifts are yours! Brilliant!

  14. love your traditions, the wrapping paper idea is great! we like to be home too :)

  15. I like the wrapping paper in the stocking tradition too cute!!!
I LOVE the new jammie's one! I did that when they were little, but now Savannah only wears shorts and a raggy t-shirt so I am not wasting money on pajamas for her (sad for me!)!!! I love your traditions!

  16. We do the Christmas Eve PJs too...that is what my mom did for me when I was growing up. This year we are starting a new tradition that my boys can open a joint gift on Christmas Eve that is something for us to do as a family that evening. This year it's a big train puzzle.

  17. Love your ideas!!! I stole your chalkboard idea from last year ( paint the tin pans from the dollar store with chalkboard paint)...they will be presents for the cousins...kind of like a manga doodle on the go. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas and traditions. By the way, are you going to post your birth story?

  18. ooooh, I love the wrapping paper idea! I may have to "borrow" that one. Such sweet traditions of great family memories your little ones will have! We made the "stay-at-home" rule when we had kids too. Not so fun lugging them around ALL day on Christmas.

  19. OMG you are truly amazing!! I think that is a great idea.. all your traditions!! I have 4 boys and I freak out when I have to go shopping fo them. But sheesh your whole 5 gift thing is amazing and the pj's and book. awesome. and especially your teacher gifts... I have to get 8 gifts for them, but the giftcard thing is a good idea (:

  20. I love the wrapping paper idea- we do the same thing- sort of. The kids all choose their own paper about a week before Christmas- all their things are wrapped in it- I love not having to put tags on everything. Happy to see that I'm not the only one who does this :)

  21. I am a teacher! What you are doing is SOOOO important and so appreciated, I'm sure. Bless your heart for thinking of teachers at Christmastime! About the three gifts, I think it's fantabby. I've also heard that giving three gifts should be the limit because if three were enough for Jesus then three should be enough for us too. ;) Merry Christmas to you!

  22. I remember reading about your Christmas traditions last year and decided that when we have children, we will do the want/need/surprise thing too!! Thank you for sharing your family traditions Emily!

  23. First off, CONGRATULATIONS on baby Olive! She is just adorable and I love her name! What a blessing! I also agree that a teacher gift is a must; they put up with ALOT. Thanks for all that you do on your blog - you pull the creativity {that I let get buried sometimes} out of me! :) One tradition that my Mom has started for us is having homemade eggrolls when we celebrate Christmas. Mmmmm!!

  24. I love your traditions! What a great mom you are! The coffee cups and giftcards are an awesome idea. Your tags are so cute!

  25. Your teacher gifts are too adorable! I'm training to be a teacher, and believe me, they don't expect anything. As daunting as it may seem to you, they love their job ^_^

On the traditions front, my family always stay at home for Christmas, too. We have a small family anyway, but it's usually just my parents, my brother (21) and me (19) at home together.
When we were kids my parents used to sneak into our rooms after we were asleep and put one present at the end of our beds to open when we woke up and so we didn't wake them at 6am!

  26. Em, I KNOW your kids will remember and appreciate the traditions you've made for them. I'll bet they will even continue some of them with their own families. I love stealing ideas from you-thanks for sharing! Also, do you take turns opening presents on Christmas morning, or do you all just tear into them???

    ReplyDelete
  27. We have 4 children, now grown, and the most fun they had at Christmas was the year we took their "main" Christmas gift & hid it in the house & sent them each on their own scavenger hunt to find it. The 1st set of instructions was in their stocking. It was so much fun to see them running through the house finding their gifts. We let them go one at a time and it was so neat to see them helping each other find the gifts, they were as excited for their siblings as they were for themselves!

  28. I LOVE your traditions. We have some already and I am adding some new ones this year. A couple inspired by YOU! I will be sharing on my blog very soon, so I will link back here when the time comes!

    Warmly,

    Elizabeth

  29. Oh, and I forgot to mention that most years, when the kids were young, we didn't put their names on the tags. Instead we assigned them each a cartoon character (one year they were Velma, Scooby Doo, Daphne & Fred) and didn't reveal who was who until the last minute! My son Mitchell ended up being Velma which he thought was pretty funny : )

  30. Oh my word, you have so many wonderful traditions!!! Love the teacher gift idea! I'm thinking of adding it to the gifts I made, because frankly I'm a little unsure of my homemade presents!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I love these traditions and they remind me a lot of the ones I had growing up! Love the teacher gifts too, so clever! Merry Christmas to you and your family!

  32. i love traditions around the holidays... its what makes it special for us and our kids... we do the pjs also and the books but i like that you do both together.. usually we do the book with the other gifts but then it often gets overlooked!.. great post!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Traditions are the best! We have always done the new jammies but my always want to open a different present. I think that they are hoping for a new toy to play with instead of something they know about. I love that you added the book. I could get into that. I am also jealous that you decided to keep Christmas at home. We have the only grandchildren on my husband's side so we have our own Christmas morning with then immediately go over to Gram's for a huge Christmas morning. I feel bad that their Christmas trumps our little Christmas since I like to keep ours simple. But at the same time, it brings Gram and Gramps so much joy that I can't imagine taking that away from them. Great gifts for your teachers! Thanks for reminding me to get mine done!

  34. Thanks for sharing all of these. What did we ever do without blogs and pinterest to give us ideas? We do something you want, something you need, something to play with, and something to read. Good idea to do the read on Xmas eve, b/c they get lost in the midst of toys the next morning.
    Merry Christmas!

  35. I love the wrapping paper idea. One tradition that my family had growing up that I would like to incorporate in a few years when my girls are a little older is to act out the Christmas story on Christmas Eve. We put on costumes (mainly robes) while my dad read from Luke 2. It was fantastic. The pictures are hilarious. We made our cats be the sheep. Makes me laugh even now.

  36. I love the idea of the wrapping paper -that way the kids don't know until the last minute which presents theirs are. Have a very Merry Christmas!

    ReplyDelete
  37. That wrapping paper idea is AWESOME! We have everyone over to our house on Christmas eve and do a huge crab fest. I love it! We have the tacky bibs with claws on them and paper covering the table and we all eat with our hands. Love it! It's probably my favorite tradition as of yet. I'm sure as our kids age we'll come up with more things to tack on.

  38. i love your idea of the wrapping paper! i read about it last year and this is the first year i am putting it into practice. it will be so fun watching them scramble to the bottom of their stockings to find their paper piece!!!

  43. We have the same Christmas eve traditions, new jammies, new book and drinking yummy hot cocoa... we don't normally watch a movie because it's too late from all the holiday parties (3 on christmas eve :S).

I think staying home on Christmas Day is a must!

  51. LOVE the coffee cup with gift card idea---did it today! The guy at Caribou had never heard of that before & thought it was such a great idea!!
Thanks for sharing! Can't wait for my baby to be old enough so I can do that for his deserving teacher!!
Impressed you got the gifts together before little Olive made her big debut!

  52. For office gifts this year I made a homemade hot chocolate powder mix (which tastes quite delish!) and cookies. Put the cookies in a cute box and the hot cocoa mix in mason jars. It's cute :)

We had traditions growing up: every kid had their own wrapping paper, one grandma's on Christmas eve, Christmas eve service, baking cookies, the other grandma's on Christmas day. There was definitely a distinct schedule to the holiday. But now we generally travel during Thanksgiving and/or Christmas. I hope that once we have little ones, we can agree to stay home and start our own traditions. :)

Love your fun traditions! What great memories! :)

  54. Your Christmas traditions are lovely! I think it's great to have fun & order in a large family {nice & necessary. lol}, but it doesn't sacrifice the fun at all. Very nice!!

  55. Hi! I'm new to your blog! I really like your 3 gift tradition. My 7 month old didn't care about gifts this year- but for next year I may have to do something like that!!!

    ReplyDelete
  56. So I know I am two months behind but I am getting caught up. I wanted to comment because my family is HUGE into traditions. Sometimes we plan them and sometimes they happen spontaneously.

One that we STILL do...is match Christmas pjs. We open them on Christmas eve also. Sometimes we all match (my mom, dad, brother, sister-in-law, 2 nephews, and me) and sometimes the girls match and the boys match. Every year we take pictures to remember. We also wear the pjs to bed and then the entire next day as well. So traditions can last a long time and this is one of our favorites.
