next up, i have some really sweet friends who have been harassing me asking me kindly if i would share olive's birth story. i keep meaning to do it, i just haven't found the time to sit down and write it all out. so, here is the "condensed-not-too-many-TMI-details-because-my-dad-reads-this-blog" version.
i had been having off and on contractions for a few weeks...and on saturday, dec. 3rd, they were coming a bit more frequent, and a bit more intense. nothing that i was concerned for, but they were there none-the-less. but the aggravating thing was that i would think i was in labor, timing contractions and such, and then they would stop. this happened quite a few times.
so, saturday evening, i decided to mow the grass. weird, i know.
when i was pregnant with kohen, i mowed the lawn and went into labor that night.
i figured this time around, it was worth a shot.
on sunday, my contractions were doing the same thing. this time though, they were "stop-and-breathe-through-them-worthy". i figured that was a good sign.
but they were random.
i'd have 3 in an hour and then not again for 3 hours. and then 1 really hard one and then not again for 2 hours. really sporadic and random.
i wasn't entirely sure i was in labor, so about 8:00 that night i called my midwife and told her what was going on.
she thought that the baby was just dropping and shifting, causing my contractions, but she did not think i was in labor.
so, i proceeded to go to bed, and as soon as i laid down, i had 3 intense contractions that were very hard to breathe through.
i went out to the living room to tell mr. anderson and i broke down into tears.
i wasn't sure if this was labor or not...i was tired of thinking i was in labor and then it stopping...i just wanted it to be the real thing...and i kept thinking "this is my fifth baby, surely i would know."
so, i called my midwife again---asking her if i could at least come in and be checked. she told me to meet her at the birthing center in an hour. so, we packed up our bags, even though i was sure i'd probably be sent back home.
our good friend arrived to stay with our other kiddos, and we headed to the birthing center.
on our ride there (about a 45 minute drive) i only had 1 contraction. so, i continued to think that this wasn't the real thing and that we would definitely be sent home.
on our ride there (about a 45 minute drive) i only had 1 contraction. so, i continued to think that this wasn't the real thing and that we would definitely be sent home.
we arrived at the birthing center and my midwife checked me. i was dilated to a 7.
it was definitely labor.
i deliver at a birthing center, and it's as natural as it comes. i am never hooked up to anything. i am free to roam, soak in the tub, eat and drink whatever i'd like. it's nice. every hour or so, they will use the doppler to check the baby's heartbeat. and they are a stone's throw away from the hospital should any complications arise.
i delivered my first 3 babies in hospitals and with epidurals. when we were pregnant with kohen, we chose the birthing center because of financial reasons, and it turned out to be a great choice for us.
don't get me wrong though. natural birth is scary. well, birth is scary.
it's hard and it's painful and while i'm in the midst of it, all i can think about is how i want to be done with it. i don't enjoy it.
but, the outcome is so worth it.
and my recovery has been much quicker than when i had hospital/epidural births.
(and with 5 kids waiting at home, i needed a quick recovery)
so, that's why i chose natural birth. and i realize it's not for everyone, and i'm most definitely not judging or thinking that my way is best. it's just what works for me.
so, after i had soaked in the tub for about 30 minutes, i had 1 contraction where i felt like i had to push, so i got out, dried off and proceeded to the bed.
turns out, i was not quite ready to push.
so for the next 2 hours i labored, leaning on mr. anderson for every bit of support that i needed. i'm pretty sure i could have broken the bones in his hands---that's how hard i was squeezing.
i get to this point in labor where all i can think about is being done.
after every contraction i ask my midwife "how many more?" "when can i push?" "how much longer?"
of course she doesn't have those answers, but i still ask them. i am a "tell me now and how" type of person. i just wanted to know how much longer i was to expect this pain.
about 2:00 (in the morning) it was time to push.
after a few pushes and screaming cuss words that i shall never have the nerve to say again, little olive was born.
i delivered her on a beautiful, victorian, king-sized bed...with a norah jones CD playing in the background...lights dimmed...mr. anderson by my side. he got to be the one to tell me that she was a girl.
i burst into tears. i couldn't believe that the lord would give us another girl...and yet, there she was.
all 7 lbs, 14 ozs. of her.
(i'm convinced 4 of those pounds were in her cheeks).
(i'm convinced 4 of those pounds were in her cheeks).
we got to spend the next 5 hours or so, sleeping in that big bed (well, mr. anderson slept, i pretty much just laid there and stared at our beautiful new creation)
around noon, less than 12 hours after she was born, we packed up and went home to the troops, where they proceeded to squeal with delight that we had a baby girl to add to the mix.
and see---that mowing the lawn thing turned out to be a labor starter, again!
i'm sure my neighbors think i'm crazy. or better yet, they think mr. anderson is crazy for letting me mow the lawn.
oh little olive. we're so glad you're an anderson.

this was such a well written birth story! mine are always so sporadic in writing and likely too full of details.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful addition Miss Olive is to the Anderson Crew :)
God Bless!
I love Olives story! How you mowed the law, how you had a natural birth and how you waited to find out what you were having! Im totally doing a natural birth next time (If I can). Judah was an ER C section bc he was a month early and frank breached, but I had no idea I was in labor (Super high pain tolerance).
ReplyDeleteOlive and Judah are birthday week twins :-) one year apart :-)
Yay!! Thanks for sharing her beautiful story.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful story! I would really like to be at a birthing center and be in a tub and such! I love hearing stories of natural births! Because I hope to have one! If you ever feel the desire to write a post about natural birth I am all ears!! My hubby and i are TTC, I hace PCOS and didn't have a cycle since I got off birth control, I started juicing almost every day and my cycles started!! this month was the 3rd month! So I am hoping any day now I will get a positive! :)
ReplyDeleteshe is beautiful!
I can't believe you had a baby and 12 hours later went home! But...by #5 I guess you're a pro. GO GIRL! I was scared to leave! I had no clue what to do! HA! She's a cutie! So thankful everyone is adjusting and loving on little cheeky olive!
ReplyDeleteWe once had a neighbor that mowed while approximately 9 months pregnant with her 4th child in the middle of July. I thought she was crazy. Maybe that was her plan too! My water broke at 35 weeks while at work so yeah. I wasn't really embarrased my pants were wet because you could obviously tell I was pregnant. I didn't have contraction pain but "pressure" pain in the nether regions. I went as long as I could before getting an epidural (about 7cm). Then it was 8 hours later (2 of it pushing) before baby girl was born.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a beautiful birth story! Little olive is precious and I love her cheeks! Good for you for going to a birthing center and using a midwife! I think every woman should be able to make her own call, free of judgement, in this situation!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful story!! I can only imagine the delight all of your other little ones felt when they saw their baby sister! What a joy! <3
ReplyDeletelove it! way to go mama and babe!
ReplyDeletecongratulations!!! lil' Olive is so precious!! completely rounded out your family, even steven 3 girls, 3 boys, how sweet??!! My last baby was like that too, weird contractions that i wasn't sure i was in labor until i got to the hospital and was 6cm. But i had all 4 of my girlies, natural too it is NOT easy, but i do like the shorter recover time, just wish it meant my chubbiness went away faster...nope! ;)
ReplyDeleteHope all is going well and adjusting nicely to your brood of 6 now!! Happy New YEAR!!
xoxo
hillary
SO WELL WRITTEN!!(: <3 love.
ReplyDeleteI wish cutting the lawn worked for me. My husband is active duty military and gone 5 days a week so I always cut the grass. We too had a surprise baby and I was due Sept. 6th. Peak grass cutting season. Every time I got done cutting the grass I thought the baby was going to fall out. Nope, not so lucky. I was dilated to 3 for 3 weeks before she was born. Still, no luck. I even played soccer with the boys (carrying my belly the whole time) and still no luck (just extreme pain afterwards). I love your story. Oh, and our surprise love was a girl too. She's 16 months old now and even though I was FREAKED out when I found out (3 days before we flew to Ethiopia to bring home our 2 kids) I can not even start thinking about life without her. God knew we NEEDED her.
ReplyDeleteLove it Love it Love it! I have zero tolerance for pain.. and the fact that you went out and mowed about made me fall off my chair!!!
ReplyDelete3 words: YOU GO GIRL!!!!
Much love to you and sweet Olive,
maggie :)
I love a good birth story! I'm not sure why, but since having children, whenever a friend has a baby, after finding out the sex, name and weight, I want all the details of the birth!??!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! x
I love her story! Thank you for sharing it. Also I live her little olive hat! Too cute!
ReplyDeletesounds perfectly wonderful!! i am a little jealous of your access to a birthcenter-- no such doing in my neck of the woods. it's even illegal for midwives to attend home births hearer! crazy. thanks for sharing!! :)
ReplyDeleteI love birth stories! Thanks for sharing Olive's!
ReplyDeleteI had a very similar labor with my son. It was so weird. When I got to the hospital the nurses were like "no way you're in labor". I was a 9! Holy smokes! That was my first all natural birth as well. Awesome!
What a sweet story and your pics. are adorable. I want my very own Olive. Isn't HE good? Bless you all!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story! Thanks for sharing!!! I always love a good birth story. :) Congrats again!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful little birth story. Congrats again, she (and your entire family :o) is just precious!
ReplyDeleteshe's just precious!
ReplyDeleteEmily I loved reading this!! And I love that you gave birth naturally, I hope to do so someday!
ReplyDeleteHi there! Thanks for taking the time to stop by my blog. I'm so happy to have found your little place here. A wonderful read. :) Are you a Tulsan? I believe we may have a friend or two in common.
ReplyDeleteBest,

Yay! Thanks for sharing! I mean, who are these ANNOYING friends that kept bugging you?? Jeez. ;) What you were saying sounds like me with my first - I kept saying things like "how much longer?" & "I don't know how much longer I can do this!". :) Thankfully with Jett it was much faster! I really hope hubby will go for #4 - I'd love to have a SURPRISE at birth! :)
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU for sharing the birth of Olive Hazel - so powerful for you and for her to look back on one day. SUCH a fan of birthing au natural in a birthing center, planned one that way m'self! Kudos to you, Mrs. Anderson. You and the mister produced another cutesy, chunky bundle of love.
ReplyDeletesuch a beautiful story!!Thank you so much for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteawww so glad she's here, she's perfect~!! I had home births with both of my girls, so I have nothing to compare it to! the Dr. and midwife were gone and had it all cleaned up within an hour of me having both my girls.....can't get any better than that!
ReplyDeleteshe's sooooooooo cute and those cheeks! love them!
tara
love, love, love her birth story! love the mowing of the yard, the cussing, the size of the bed...just love the whole thing! welcome little one!
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness! what a story! I'm sort-of new to your blog, but L.O.V.E. it! We want to have another baby so bad, but I currently don't have insurance because my hubby lost his job and is now self employed. Our kids have insuarnce, but we can't afford all the family plans out there that cover maternity. I have wondered what my options are in case I DO get pregnant, not trying. I would love to learn more about birthing centers....thanks for sharing! :) blessings, cat (www.catdmoore.com)
ReplyDeleteThose cheeks are just to die for! Such a great story.
ReplyDeleteI love that little picture of her toes! She is so sweet!
ReplyDeleteAww...good job mama!!
ReplyDeleteThose cheeks really are about the best cheeks around.
I'm not planning on having any more but if I were I would really like to have one naturally...without the epidural...I chickened out. The unknown was just too much for me. If I had known how long it was going to be then I could have just focused on that...high five to you and sticking with it.
Man, you guys make cute kiddos!!
These pics are just the cutest!! Thanks for sharing your birth story... I've had similar labors where it comes and goes for weeks and it's so frustrating! but totally worth it :)
ReplyDeletewell, there's this one fail-proof labour kick starter that works for me..."it's the lovin that got the bebe in there, it's the lovin that gets the bebe out!" mmmhmm. wise words by Ina May Gaskin thankyouverymuch.
ReplyDeletei'm seriously hoping that babe left some Delicious over for the rest of us incubating, cos it looks like she stole the lot! :)

Well, seems I'm totally off. :) I came this way via Under the Sycamore, who I managed to find via a friend of mine on Instagram, of all places. Her name is Shannon Phillips and she's a friend in Tulsa. Anyway ... I noticed there were several of you bloggers that seemed somehow connected to Shannon and I assumed you might all live in Tulsa. Craziness! Despite all, glad to meet you! :)
ReplyDeleteKirsty
Beautiful story! And that Olive beanie is the most adorable thing! Congratulations again! Those cheeks are just delicious!
ReplyDeleteLove that you shared this story! It's perfect.
ReplyDeleteAs is Ms. Olive ~ most especially in that white ladybug covered pj!!!
And those cheeks? No words.
Thank you for telling your birth story. You have encouraged me as I am choosing natural birth with baby#3, due July 10. I was able to go totally natural with my 2nd and it was such a wonderful experience. I'm so nervous with #3 since we are in a new state, new doctor (midwife), new hospital and they don't have a birthing tub...I'm scared. Thank you for telling this story. It encourages me to stick with natural and not go for the epidural.
ReplyDeleteOh sweet Olive makes my heart swell! She is absolutely beautiful and breathtaking.
ReplyDeleteYour birth story makes me want to go natural for my next baby. The Victorian bed with the beautiful setting sounds so wonderful. Such an awesome moment for you guys!
So happy for you all! I know you are enjoying that precious little girl so much. :)
Awwww, congrats on the newest addition. She is beautiful. Your story reminded me of my own. Just had a beautiful boy mid November, naturally. What an experience!
ReplyDeletei am an L&D nurse. i love babies and mammas. i love olive's birth story. mowing the lawn- awesome.
ReplyDeletethx for sharing.
